Turning travel disruptions into incremental footfall and retail revenue

Valora, Switzerland's leading convenience retailer, partnered with Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) and Axon Vibe to activate contextual, location-aware retail campaigns inside the SBB app. Using real-time travel context, Axon Vibe enabled SBB to deliver timely digital vouchers — such as a complimentary coffee at k kiosk — during delays, extended transfer times, or alternative-route choices.

The collaboration demonstrated how intent-based, in-transit engagement converts everyday travel moments into measurable store visits, incremental purchases, and stronger customer goodwill for both transport operators and retail brands.

The Result

Using Axon Vibe's platform, SBB delivered personalized digital vouchers directly inside its SBB app, triggered by real travel situations such as train delays, extended transfer times, or the selection of less crowded alternative connections. These vouchers were redeemed across Valora's k kiosk store network, located in and around major Swiss rail stations.

The campaigns generated strong commercial results. More than 33% of voucher redemptions came from first-time store visitors, while between 20% and 30% of redemptions included additional products beyond the complimentary item, driving incremental retail revenue and higher basket values, in average CHF 5.50. Beyond direct sales impact, the initiative improved customer satisfaction by turning moments of friction — such as delays — into positive, brand-building experiences. The collaboration demonstrated Axon Vibe's ability to connect real-time travel context with measurable retail outcomes at scale.

The Challenge

Retailers in transport hubs face highly variable demand, driven by unpredictable passenger flows, delays, and transfer patterns. Traditional digital advertising struggles to influence behavior at the precise moment when travelers have time, intent, and proximity to visit a store.

At the same time, SBB seeks to improve passenger experience during disruptions while creating new non-fare value within its station ecosystem. Any solution must respect strict opt-in requirements, operate seamlessly within the SBB app, and provide clear attribution between digital engagement and in-store redemption. Axon Vibe addressed these challenges by combining automatic journey detection, real-time context, and result-driven activation — directly linking travel moments to measurable retail performance.
